What is NEUROPATHIC PAIN? What does NEUROPATHIC PAIN mean? NEUROPATHIC PAIN meaning – NEUROPATHIC PAIN definition – NEUROPATHIC PAIN explanation.

Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license.

Neuropathic pain is pain caused by damage or disease affecting the somatosensory nervous system. Neuropathic pain may be associated with abnormal sensations called dysesthesia or pain from normally non-painful stimuli (allodynia). It may have continuous and/or episodic (paroxysmal) components. The latter resemble stabbings or electric shocks. Common qualities include burning or coldness, “pins and needles” sensations, numbness and itching.

Up to 7% to 8% of the European population is affected, and in 5% of persons it may be severe. Neuropathic pain may result from disorders of the peripheral nervous system or the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Thus, neuropathic pain may be divided into peripheral neuropathic pain, central neuropathic pain, or mixed (peripheral and central) neuropathic pain.

Central neuropathic pain is found in spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and some strokes. Aside from diabetes (see diabetic neuropathy) and other metabolic conditions, the common causes of painful peripheral neuropathies are herpes zoster infection, HIV-related neuropathies, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, remote manifestations of malignancies, immune mediated disorders and physical trauma to a nerve trunk. Neuropathic pain is common in cancer as a direct result of cancer on peripheral nerves (e.g., compression by a tumor), or as a side effect of chemotherapy (chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy), radiation injury or surgery.

The history of pain management can be traced back to ancient times. Galen also suggested nerve tissue as the transferring route of pain to the brain through the invisible psychic pneuma. The idea of origination of pain from the nerve itself, without any exciting pathology in other organs is presented by medieval medical scholars such as Rhazes, Haly Abbas and Avicenna. They named this type of pain specifically as “vaja al asab” , described its numbness, tingling and needling quality, discussed its etiology and the differentinting characteristics. The description of neuralgia was made by John Fothergill (1712-1780). In an medical article entitled “Clinical Lecture on Lead Neuropathy” published in 1924 the word “Neuropathy” was used for the first time by Gordon.

LYRICS
If you’ve ever wondered why
Disney’s tales all end in lies
Here’s what happened after all their dreams came true

Ariel
I loved being princess down in — this beautiful ocean blue
But mermaids are going missing — they end up in someone’s stew
So just try to put yourself in — to somebody else’s gills
You’re killing my ecosystem — with fishing and oil spills
Thank you BP, thank you BP
The British are killing, oil is spilling
Now I can’t see… MY EYES!
Chinamen feast on Flounder’s fins
Plus the Japanese killed all my whale friends
Oceans are browning, I think I’m drowning
Thanks to BP
YOU SUCK!

Jasmine
Hey, I’m OK, but I’m slightly scared
My husband’s a mark for the War on Terror
Aladdin was taken by the CIA
We’re not Taliban
You’ve got the wrong man
In Guantanamo Bay
Prince Ali, where could he be, drowning in wawa
Interrogation from the nation of the “free”
Bin Laden’s taken the fall
We’re not trained pilots at all
Jafar went crazy and no one put up a fuss
We’re for freedom, Genie can vouch for us
Bush was crazy, Obama’s lazy, al-Qaeda’s not in this country
Set free my Prince Ali

Belle
A whore! A whore!
A whore, a whore, a whore!
This town’s gone wild since I married Adam
They think I’m going straight to hell
But the charges laid on me
Of bestiality
Could wind up getting me thrown in a cell
No, I’m overrun by mad men
I hear they plan to burn me at the stake
They legit believe I’m Satan
And now I hear that PETA’s gonna take my beast away

Pocahontas
After John Smith traveled back to England
I helped my people cultivate the fields
More English, French, and Spaniards came to visit
And they greeted us with guns and germs and steel
They forced us into unknown lands of exile
They pillaged, raped, and left us all for dead
So now I’m far more liberal with a weapon
When I separate their bodies from their heads
Have you ever held the entrails of an English guy?
Or bit the beating hearts of Spanish men?
Can you shoot an arrow in some French guy’s eyeball?
Can you paint with the red colors in these men
I can murder if I please
Cause I’m dying of disease
I can paint with the red colors in these men

Thanks to BP
Where’s Prince Ali?
Bestiality
I’ve got STDs

OPQRST Pain Assessment (Nursing)

pain No Comments »

OPQRST Pain Assessment (Nursing)

The OPQRST nursing pain assessment is super important for you to know as a nursing student. You’ll need to learn how to assess pain in order to keep your patients comfortable, and also to figure out what might be going on in their body, because pain can tell you a lot about a patients condition.

So, you might be thinking, what the heck does OPQRST even mean?

OPQRST is a handy dandy mnemonic for assessing pain.

It stands for:
O: Onset
P: Provocation or Palliation
Q: Quality
R: Region or Radiation
S: Severity
T: Timing

And there are some key questions you’ll need to ask for each of these categories:

O: Onset:
What were you doing when the pain started?
Did the pain happen suddenly, or had it been coming on for a while?

P: Provocation or Palliation
What makes the pain worse?
What makes the pain better?

Q: Quality
Can you describe the pain for me?

R: Region or Radiation
Where is the pain located?
Is it spreading or extending to another area?

S: Severity
On a scale of 0-10, with 0 being no pain at all, and 10 being the worst possible pain imaginable, where is your pain level at right now?

T: Timing
What were you doing when the pain started?
Is the pain always there or does it come and go?
Is there anything different about the pain than when it started?
Has this pain ever happened before?

The OPQRST mnemonic can be super handy when you’re at your nursing school clinicals, or when you need to remember it during lecture class or skills lab.

And of course, we’ve got a free cheat sheet for you to print off so that you can remember all of these questions to ask for the OPQRST pain assessment: http://bit.ly/nursingsos11

Baking Mad Monday: Pain Au Chocolat

pain No Comments »

It’s Monday, so let’s get Baking Mad with my friends from http://www.bakingmad.com with a French classic.

For my Pain Au Chocolat, you’ll need:

250ml milk
450gr plain flour
1tsp yeast
Chocolate bars
10gr unsalted butter
40gr golden caster sugar
150gr unsalted butter
1tsp salt
1egg

Method:

First make the dough – in a bowl of a mixer place the milk, flour, yeast, unsalted butter, sugar and salt. Using the dough hook mix ’til the dough has detached itself from the bowl.

Place in a slightly floured bowl, cover with film or damp towel and leave to prove for 40mins at room temperature. Punch it down and turn onto a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, batch the butter into a rectangle. Roll the dough into a square, place the butter into the middle and fold the dough like an envelope. You must make sure the butter is completely wrapped-in.

Using the rolling pin roll the dough into a rectangle 20cmx50cm. Fold the dough in thirds lengthways, like a business letter. This completes the first “tour”.

Rotate to 90 degrees so that the folded edge is on your left and the dough is facing you like a book. Roll and repeat the operation and cover and place in the fridge for at least 30mins and then give the dough another 2 “tours”, so you complete 4 “tours” in total.

Then, roll the pastry into a rectangle and cut bands roughly 10cm by 20cm 5mm thick. Place the chocolate bar on the top and then roll them.

Place them on a buttered baking tray making sure to have the joint under the roll. With your hand flattened them gently. Cover and let to prove at room temperature for another 35/40 mins. Brush with the beaten egg and bake in a pre heated oven 180c for 25/30mn till golden brown.

Let to cool down before serving with a fresh coffee!

Happy Baking!
